“God’s Grace Is Incomprehensible!”(Mt.20:1-16).
With the dawn of a new day, LORD, I thank you for your grace. It is sufficient for me!
Quite often, when I mount the pulpit to preach and realise that there are latecomers outside, I tell the ushers to let them in. Sometimes, you may not know the effort a person made to be this early – even though late. Through the little things in daily living, we come to a full knowledge of how God dispenses his grace through impartial justice and indiscriminate love.
Quite often, God’s grace upon others seems unfair and partial to our myopic limitedness. Instead of seeking, understanding, and applying God’s grace, we often become judges and teachers wanting to tell God what should have been – contrary to what he does by his righteous judgment.
Our pericope is captioned, “The parable of the workers in the vineyard.” It tells the story of a man who went and employed workers at different periods of the day. At the close of work, he asked that the paymaster should begin with those who were employed just an hour before the close of the day.
Everything was going on well until the people who had worked from morning received the same pay as those who worked for just an hour. They were angry. They wondered why they had to receive the same amount as those who came very late. The master could not understand the reason for their anger since he paid them what they had agreed upon. He had a right to do as he pleased with his money.
God’s grace teaches us that being first is not necessarily a condition for privilege in the kingdom of God. Grace is about benefiting the undeserved love of God.
My friend, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” “The first shall be the last” – by God’s decision, and he knows the reason for his decision and choice.
God’s grace alone benefitted only through Jesus Christ is enough for us. Appreciate what you have received and do not be envious of what others have received. It is only in your thinking that you consider yourself more deserving than others. God has a right to his generosity!
Thank God for what you have deservedly received and be happy with those who, by his grace, are given what you think they do not deserve!
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit, give me a heart that appreciates the outpouring of God’s grace upon others. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
