“One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’ But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. Then he asked them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?’ And they had nothing to say.”
“Doing Good On The Sabbath!”(Lk.14:1-6).1
For a new day, we thank you, O LORD.
Folk wisdom says “the bucket gets jealous when the basket is able to hold water.” We wouldn’t explain why Jesus went to eat in the house of “a prominent Pharisee” and “was being carefully watched.” They must have intentionally placed the sick man where Jesus will see him. And they guessed rightly that once he saw the man, he would (re)act.
When he asked whether it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not, they remained silent because it was lawful. It was Rabbinic interpretations that made it unlawful to heal on the Sabbath. Mosaic law did not say it was unlawful to heal on the Sabbath.
Like we said the other day, our prayers on the Sabbath wouldn’t be necessary if we knew God would not answer them on that day. And if it is that he answers, it means he is working on the Sabbath in the same way the clergies work on the Sabbath. We cannot postpone the good we ought to do on the Sabbath to the next day. The next day may never be either for us or the person who needed our services. Live this day as if it were your last.(cf. Prv.27:1). If that is so, then it is good to do the good you have to do today rather than postponing it to tomorrow that may never be for you.
Secondly, don’t spend your time setting traps for other people or becoming a monitoring spirit of people’s lives. Do the good you can today by all the possible means that you can!
Prayer: Holy Spirit, inspire me with the spirit of goodwill to do the good I can any time. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
