“Do As I Have Done For You!”(Jn.13:1-15).
“Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
Africans value the last words of a dieing father. It is a last testament; an oral will which has to be strongly adhered to. The action of Jesus above and the words are strong last words to those who must continue his mission here on earth.
John alone reports that during his last days, the Lord Jesus Christ washed the feet of his disciples. Washing the feet of guests was a menial job which was normally performed by a servant. On this occasion there was no servant and none of the Twelve volunteered to do the washing. Jesus did it himself.
The Lord said what he had done is an example for us to follow. By this he does not mean that we should go washing the feet of each other as we often dramatize on Maundy Thursday.
The washing of one another’s feet is a lesson in humility. We Christians should be ready and willing at all times to perform the most menial services for one another.
At one time a dispute arose among the disciples as to who of them was considered to be the greatest. Among other things, Jesus told them, “I am among you as one who serves…”(Lk.22:24ff).
Disciples are servants at the service of others, no matter whatever arguments we may advance to justify the big titles and lofty heights we confer on the messengers of the gospel.
That notwithstanding, positions do not take away from us the servant responsibilities that we owe to one another.
Remember always that it is the Lord himself who has ordered, saying, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
Prayer of the week: Holy Spirit prompt me daily to willingly be at the service of whoever needs my services. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working day and week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
