“The Name Above Every Name!”(Phi. 2:6-11).
In his teaching on humility the Lord Jesus Christ prescribes that when invited at an occasion one should avoid humiliation and embarrassment by not taking the place of honour. Someone more distinguished than you may have been invited as well. In which case you will be asked to surrender your seat to that person. You would now be humiliated by taking a least important seat. Rather, it is preferable to take a lower seat, and you may be asked to move up to a better place. This will honour you in the presence of fellow guests. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”(Lk. 14:7-11).
Jesus did not teach what he did not practice. He was not the “do what I say, not what I do” kind of teacher! Paul explains the Lord’s humility in these words: Christ Jesus “being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross.” We note that “crucifixion was the most degrading kind of execution that could be inflicted on a person.”
As humble as he was, “God raised him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God.”
The full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ is fully expressed in the text above, but despite his deity, in his humanity he was quite humble.
Dear friend, to those of us who call the name of Christ, Paul says, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus”(Phi. 2:5). Therefore, humble yourself in this earthly realm to be exalted in the spiritual realm!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ I confess that you are Lord. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you! Happy New year!
