“Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow…!” (I Cor.8:2-6).
Calling the day of conferment “commencement” may have been motovated by the fact that “the more you know, the more you realise that you know nothing.” Commencement carries the sense that on this day the degree you just earned is not an arrival point; rather it is the beginning of a further search. Knowledge humbles rather than lead to pride.
Paul states, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God.”
Whoever makes a self claim to wisdom is at best a wiseacre! We can never be knowledgeable enough about God, but when we love God, then God knows us.
The issue concerning food offered to idols should not be a bone of contention with Christians. “We know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one.” This is not to say that there are no gods. The world is inundated with many gods and many lords, “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.”
God created both the wood and the person who carves the wood into an idol. God also created the food and the people who cook and eat the food offered to the idol. All of them come from God and it is for him that we live. “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it”(Ps.24:1).
Unfortunately, “not everyone knows this.”
My friend, the highlight here is that if you love God he will know you. Our focus must always be God alone, who is God from whom all blessings flow and for whom we live. And Jesus Christ is the only Lord through whom all things came and through whom we live. Idols remain idols and food offered to them are not provided by them.
Prayer: Father Almighty, by the Holy Spirit, I fix my eyes on you through Jesus Christ your Son our only Lord and Saviour. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
