“Keep The New Law!”
The law said, “You shall not commit adultery”(Ex,29:14). Jesus modified this law saying, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Judaism was a patriarchal religion and so scriptures addressed men more than women. The keywords in the text are adultery and lust. Lust is “a strong sexual desire.” It is the man who is considered to be lustful and the initiator of adultery. The woman is an innocent victim of circumstance.
However, in the present dispensation the woman is no longer an innocent victim of circumstance. The wiseman said, “Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes”(Prv.6:25). To captivate with her eyes is to seduce which means to entice someone into sexual activity.
What is now trending on social media in homeland is “Kayamata” a charm used in seducing men whose pockets are heavy.
Therefore, in the present generation the text addresses both men and women. Like we asked yesterday, “When you look, what do you see?” Lust is not about what the eyes sees, it is about what the heart desires.
By the new content brought in by Jesus to an old law, the majority of us should stop committing the adultery we do on a daily basis by looking at others lustfully. And this includes heterosexuals, homesexuals/lesbians, pornographers and mastubators.
Jesus says, if your right eye causes you to sin, you should gouge it out. This is not to be understood literally. He is not talking about the mutilation of the flesh. He means that “we should deal as drastically as necessary with sin.”
Dear friend, reflect deeply on the way you look at somebody. That is why in some parts of the world staring intently at someone is considered sexual harrassment. And you too, stop seducing others with your looks or with your kayamata.
Prayer of the week: Lord Jesus Christ purge me of the sins of the flesh and put a right spirit within me. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week. Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
