“Do Not Be Afraid…Stand Firm…The Lord Will Fight For You…!”
Believers cannot just consider that it is the feeble-minded who are afraid. The reason for fear is often justifiable. What is problematic is that fear is a symptom of lack of trust or faith in the One who holds our destiny in his hands.
What God has said he will do, he will surely do!
Nelson Mandela who titled one his books, “No Easy Walk To Freedom” saw the freedom only after twenty seven years of his imprisonment amidst the loss of thousands of human lives. What it means to be free is according to me better explained in the song “Freedom is coming” in the movie, “Sarafina.” The song opens with a youthful wish for the day Mandela will be freed from prison and he will say, “…My people today I am free. I am free because you have never forgotten the day is coming when we will all be free. Free from hatred, free from fear, free from killing. You are young, you will live to see the day. And if I don’t live to see the day, you better believe it…”
What captures my attention in that song and for the purpose of our meditation today is on the line, “Free from fear.” Justifiably the Israelites on their exodus journey had to fear when they saw Pharaoh marching after them with his chariots, horsemen and troops. They were terrified and started reminiscing on the glories of Egypt where they could have at least died and be given decent burials. They questioned why Moses caused them to come die in the desert?
The answer Moses gave to them on that day is also for us in our difficult moments when we are not too sure about anything anymore; when we think our enslavement was better than our journey to freedom. The words come to us like the soothing balm of Gilead on our sores, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today…The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still…” And that is how the angel of the Lord protected them just as he will protect you against your enemies(Ex,14:8-20).
On a personal not Exodus 14:14 plus two other verses of scriptures guide my life and my perspectives on life’s issues. It is the Lord who fights our battles, both the seen and unseen battles! It is not the weapons with which we surround ourselves that bring us victory! No! The Lord alone is our victory.
My friend, whatever battle you are engaged in now or at any time; leave it to God! “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring on you… The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Prayer: Thank you Lord for you are always there fighting my battles in both the physical and spiritual realms. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
