“Watch And Pray!”
Friends are not always what they say they are. You know your true friends in times of need.
That was the bitter experience of Jesus in his last days. His trusted friends could not just keep watch when he was overwhelmed with sorrow. Not to talk of the one who betrayed him with a kiss. Beware of a Judas’ kiss!
In moments when we are overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, we need close friends whom we trust to keep watch.
Even though Jesus was Son of God, his humanity was truly revealed when he was approaching death. He was deeply distressed and troubled and couldn’t keep it to himself. He told his trusted friends, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” He cried to the Father, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
In that troubled moment he wanted his trusted friends to support him merely by keeping watch. But he was dissapppointed because they could not keep watch for even one hour. Each time he came he found them sleeping.
Jesus’ advice to his friends at his hour of distress and pain comes strongly to us: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the body is weak”(Mk.14:27-52).
We easily fall into temptation when we are not alert. So therefore, “watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” “Awake, you sleeper…” and stand by your friends in their times of need!
Prayer: Holy Spirit prompt me to keep watch and to stand by my friends in their times of pain and sorrow. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
