“Jesus Christ Is The Only Way…!”
The picture still comes to me vividly the moment my memory drifts towards that direction. Few months before my father passed on he asked me to go call two fathers who were close relatives. When they came, he raised an issue with them which they gave him an answer that assailed his worries. They spoke in proverbs thinking I was too young to understand. – I was sixteen. My father was concerned about succession to the family stool.
Again, barely two months before he died he asked me to take a machete and enter the bush with him. He pointed to some plantain suckers and asked me to remove them. When I did, he showed me where to plant them.
I may have been sixteen only, but I could see that my father will not live to eat those plantains. The oldman knew he was dieing, but he was preparing me on how to face my tomorrow.
Many parents, just like my dad prepare for their offspring in different ways according to their means and statuses in life.
Unfortunately all such preparations are concerned about how to continue in this physical life. Little or no preparation is made about the hereafter.
Jesus offers us an alternative preparation which is for the life in the hereafter. Jesus predicted his death to the eleven and this raised a worry in them. So he comforted them with these consoling words which assured them of a glorious future in life in the hereafter. He told them, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am…” These are surely not the kind of words we want to hear from a dying master or to read from his will. We are interested in legacies that ensure physical and mundane continuity.
Jesus prepares us that spiritual life is of utmost importance than the temporary inheritances of the temporal!
He nailed it by using one of those “I Am” word which always irked his rivals each time he used it! “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn.14:1-6).
My friend, Jesus is not one out of many ways, he is the only way! He is both truth and life incarnated! And there is no other way to the Father except through him. To get to the Father through Jesus is “in spirit and in truth” because “God is spirit”(Jn.4:24).
In Jesus there is assurance of a better life there than here, but how you live the life here determines the life you’ll be offered there.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ I trust in God and in you because you are the way and the truth and the life. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
