“Make Yourself The Greatest In The Kingdom Of Heaven…!”
Two men fought and almost killed each other over a lady none of them had yet approached to express his love for her. Sometimes we argue, quarell, fight and even kill others over what we only imagine that we are the rightful owners.
Matthew’s version of the story concerning who is the greatest is specific to “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” In Luke’s version the argument among the disciples was as to “which of them would be the greatest” (Lk.9:46-48). Meanwhile in Mark the argument was “about who was the greatest” (Mk.9:33-37).
We would limit ourselves to Matthew’s version. Jesus’ response to the disciples is context specific. “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus’ response implies that the disciples were not yet in the kingdom of heaven, yet they were worrying themselves about who is the greatest in that kingdom. They were fighting over a lady none of them had yet approached. Jesus told them to “catch the bear before selling the skin”, or to “kill a banaman turaco bird before fixing its red feather on the cap!”
To enter the kingdom of heaven requires a change from an adult mindset to that of a child. And “whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” The kingdom is right here with us, but as long as we lack childlike attitudes we are not yet in it. The moment we are humble like children, then we are already in it and become the greatest in the kingdom.
This of course means that there is no reason to seek greatness because whoever is in the kingdom is the greatest. Therefore, once inside everybody is the greatest. In a country where everybody is king, nobody is servant to anybody, or in humility everybody is a servant to everyone.
What is important is to welcome Jesus through welcoming even the least person in his name (Mt.18:1-5).
My friend, the only greatness you should strive for is to be humble like a child and if you receive any scum of the earth in the name of Jesus you have received him.
Prayer of the week: Holy Spirit help me to change and become like a little child so that I can enter the kingdom of heaven. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
“God’s Love!”
