“Give The Needy Some Respect First…!”
We may want to give all justifiable reasons why we make public what we give to the needy. We may consider the reasons to be genuine. It still does not cancel the fact that whatever reasons we give for publicising our charitable actions and donations contradicts the teachings of the one we call “Master.”
Jesus challenged the hypocrites who announced the gifts to the needy with trumpets (media outlets and cameras) in the synagogues and on street corners. They did so to be honoured by others. If we do the same thing like them today, then we are hypocrites just like the Pharisees who were doing that.
Public asts of charity and announcements of what we have done to the needy attracts full rewards from those who see it.
The words od Jesus reverberates: “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do…But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Mtt.6:1-4).
It is a figure of speech for your left hand not to know what your right hand is doing. Sometimes you have to hold the gift in both hands, so both hands must know. What is needed is that do not use the poor and needy as objects to boost on your pride and ego. A person may be in need, but the one still has dignity and self-esteem!
The first and most important gift to the needy is their dignity, respect, honour and self-esteem! Whatever you do or give to a needy person should be motivated by love and a real desire to serve. Whatever your task and whatever you are giving out, do so as to the Lord and not to humanbeings.
Do not even give to the needy because you are hoping for a reward from God! Not at all! But let it be known by God and not by the public! Keep the cameras away when you help others! God is happy with that. Remember, humans may praise the act, but God weighs the motives! Do good for goodness sake, whether it is known or not.
Prayer: Holy Spirit keep leading me so that I should never be self-seeking when I give to the needy. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
