“What God Says Will Be, Will Be!”
One of my lecturers once asked us, “Who are you Gentiles that you are praying for the salvation of the Jews?” His concern was that we have borrowed a people’s religion and we are now boasting about it as if it was originally ours.
And yesterday as I was discussing today’s text with a colleague he rephrased the worry by asking, “Why should you be jealous about whom the Lord will save?” All this because we boast that we are the “new Israel.” Of course, we are the new Israel. We are heirs of Abraham by adoption.
The early Gentile believers had this concern as well. In order to clear our ignorance of the mystery so that we shouldn’t be conceited Paul addressed the issue in Romans by stating inter alia: “…all Israel will be saved… As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable…. God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all” Rom.11:25-32).
The other day I said “what is written stays written” meaning that when God has written your name in the book of life with a golden pen nobody can erase it.
The early believers were allowed to worship freely in the temple until they started praying and cursing the Jews of Judaism. That was when they were driven out of the temple.
It is worthy to note that before God none of us is superior to the other. His gifts and his call are irrevocable!
If you are saved today, approach the unsaved with love “For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.” In due time he makes all men realise that salvation is found in no-one else but Jesus Christ.
Be happy that you have been saved, but don’t be happy that others have not been saved. Rather hold their hands and lead them through the gate of salvation.
Sunday prayer: Thank you Lord for making your plans for me irrevocable. Wipe away my ignorance so that I should not be conceited. Amen!
