“No Divided Loyalty!”
Dr. Jerkyl was a good citizen and a doctor while Mr. Hyde was a murderer. It however turned out that Jerkyl and Hyde were the same person. Dr. Jerkyl had a portion which could transform him to Hyde and when the portion was spent while he was still Hyde he would committ murder.
Oftentimes you read expressions like, “How did we get hear?” As if we are so naive and innocent! One way or the other we have been having lunch with God while drinking our evening tea with the devil.
In life there is always a choice to make, but whatever choice you make, you must be ready to live with its consequence. We cannot continue to play Dr. Jerkyl and Mr. Hyde.
Jesus says, “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Lk.16:10-13).
Money is used here as a personification for (D)evil. Somebody has this acronym for money: “M= many shall get into trouble for my sake. O= on me everybody shall depend. N= none shall be in want where I’m concerned. E= engage me in whatever way and you’ll succeed. Y= yet, I am the root of all evil!”
God does not tolerate rivals. Faithfulness to God requires undivided attention. Whatever we give too much attention to becomes an idol. And once it becomes an idol, attention becomes divided and since loyalty is hard to divide, the temptation is to love that which is tangible and feasible – the idol!
Not as if money in itself is bad. Earlier on Jesus said, “…use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” In other words, be trustworthy in hadling worldly wealth so that God will trust you with true riches”(Lk.16:9-13). All the gifts we are blessed with are worldly wealth to be used for the welfare of others as well!
My friend, there is a choice to make, but choose wisely. Do not make a choice because you want to justify yourself in the eyes of men. Note that “what is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight”(Lk.16:15). Remember also that you cannot have it both ways. It is either God or the devil!
Weekend prayer: Lord turn my eyes from looking at vanities so that I can serve you with undivided loyalty. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
