“Do Not Weary Yourself About Earthly Things!”
Before his execution Socrates told those who condemned him, “The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our seperate ways – I to die, and you to live. Which is better God only knows.” (Apology).
Is life in the hereafter going to have the same material comfort that humans have become used to in this life?
For those who believe in the resurrection, the worry is whether life will continue with the same material comfort and social status being enjoyed now.
What about the case where in a Levirate marriage system seven brothers got married to the same woman? Whose wife is she going to become in the resurrection?
The question stretches further than just the issue of Levirate marriage. We may be wondering whether kings, queens, emperors, slaves and commoners would still maintain their ranks and situations in the resurrection!
According to Jesus this is being anthropocentric! “For those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection…He is not a God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive”(Lk.20:27-39).
Dear friend, life here is just too brief. Make the best of it by putting a smile on the face of someone less unfortunate than you! By so doing you will be storing your treasures in heaven where it won’t rust!
Loving attention to the needs of others is essential to being “considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection!” “I was hungry and you fed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was in prison and you visited me…!”
We came here with nothing, the things we have acquired here, they will remain here when we leave from here! In the resurrection life, rank, portfolio, financial strength and social status won’t exist!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ humble me and teach me the transient nature of earthly things so that my focus should be heavenward. Amen!
Happy and blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
