“Jesus Christ Has Taken Off Your Veil; Keep It That Way,!”
Those of us who grew up in the villages know very well that masquerades do unusual out of norms things. That is why my people say “you shouldn’t wear a mask and yet be known by your feet.”
Remember the Christmas carol in which the little child is planning to tell the father that he saw father Christmas kissing his mum.
Those who wear masks are never up to any good! Unfortunately for us these days our streets are full of masked uniformed men and women and the havoc they cause are scary and frightening! The grass keep bearing the brunt as two elephants fight.
In a nutshell, putting on a mask or veil is a disguise which quite often is intended for mischief. A mask or veil is a disguise, and a disguise is intended to hide the reality. In some religions the veil is intended to hide the beauty or ugliness of the lady, thus avoiding any unintended consequences.
By the way a mask is much more than what is used to cover the face. Society and religion imposes on us certain norms which in order to keep up appearances we all wear masks so as to hypocritically conform to those norms.
Who and what are you when out of public view? When Jesus told the people who brought the woman caught in adultery, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” They all left because they were all wearing masks; and it is somehow evident that their reaction to the woman’s sin was “projection”(Cf Jn.8:1-11). We condemn in others the sins we want to commit but lack the opportunity or fear the shame if caught! The question remains, “Is something evil because it it punished or it is punished because it is evil?” That is why my people say “the thief who has not yet been caught is king!”
I agree with the person who said, “I choose not to judge others…because in some areas of my own life, I’m still on trial myself;” except that through Jesus Christ the veil has been taken off so that the glory shines on me, but the grey areas are still there.
What is important now is that we are exposed to the reality that comportment to the old law cannot gain any perfection for us, but Christ who is our righteousness has put us right with God. The mask or veil has been taken off so that we now know it is not by doing this or that which makes us right, but it is Christ Jesus who is Spirit; the same Spirit that has brought us freedom. Having put off the veil we “are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is Spirit.” To say we “are being transformed..,” means it is a process and not an event. This in other words is to say, since we have been given for free what we could not achieve by merit, we must therefore do the works of righteousness as a token of appreciation for God’s free largesse. In the words of the psalmist, “Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright of heart…”(96).
Yes, “God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of the Lord in the face of Christ”(II Cor.3:12-18&4:6).
Sunday prayer: Heavely Father, let your light shine in my heart to give me the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
