“Pray That You Will Not Fall Into Temptation!”
Jesus had gone to pray on the Mount of Olives. While there he told his disciples, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” He withdrew from them and started praying.
When he came back to them they were sleeping. In his own pain and anguish when “his sweat was like drops of blood,” Jesus still found time to encourage his disciples, “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Yes, many are the times when we are either physically asleep or our minds are asleep. But these are times when we would have been alert and engaged in prayers.
According to Luke the disciples did not just love sleep. They were asleep because they were “exhausted from sorrow.” The sorrow about Jesus was already heavy on them, but that was no excuse for not being awake and praying.
Going by the gospel of Luke, this is the last time that Jesus addresses his disciples in his physical life. These are words to take seriously. Temptations surround us in various shapes and forms and the moment we are spiritually asleep, we become physically vulnerable to them!
These last words of Jesus to us should be a constant reminder to be constantly put into practice so that we won’t fall into temptation.
Prayer: Holy Spirit be my strength and enable me to pray and overcome temptations. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
