“Lord Give Me A Discerning Spirit…!”
Philip Jenkins recounts an encounter between an African Anglican and an American Episcopalian during a Bible study. While the African had confidence in the clear words of scripture, the American stressed the need to interpret the Bible in the light of modern scholarship and contemporary mores. At one point the African asked, “If you don’t believe the scripture, why did you bring it to us in the first place?”
The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) has just organised a symposium on “Misleading Theologies.” They do recognise that the continent is overcrowded with false prophets generating a multiplicity of conflicting theologies. The trend is one where the words of Scripture are treated as a secondary source and not as primary source.
So to say, references are being made to the Bible more than the Bible serves as reference. Even when biblical texts are used, single verses are lifted out of its context and interpreted to suit the whims and caprices of the preacher.
False prophets everywhere, taking advantage of the gullibility and religious cravings of the ignorant masses! Promising what cannot be realised; raising false hopes; interpreting texts of accommodative religion, thus making people comfortable in wrongdoings and evil!
One way or the other we are all guilty of false prophecies! That notwithstanding, the test of any true prophecy is time and results! Jesus warns, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognise them…”(Mtt.7:15-20).
My friend, pray for discernment so that you can distinguish between the wheat and the weed! As to us who have been assigned, let us strive to be appraised and appreciated for character and not reputation!
Prayer: Lord give me a spirit of discernment not to be led astray by false prophets. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
