“God Will Commend You For Approval!”
What makes people to boast? They “commend themselves…They measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves by themselves…” but by doing this “they are not wise.”
I checked up again on the word boast and it says, it is to “talk with excessive pride and self-satisfaction about one’s achievements, possessions, or abilities…” We are all guilty of being boastful because each person wants to point out that he or she made some strides or left a landmark in some domain.
It’s only problematic when one becomes conceited. Some people lay foundations on plots others bought. Some raise the structures on foundations which others laid. Others come and put the roofs of those structures. If you are the one who put the finishing touches, do not boast that you built the house without even mentioning the other people who worked before you.
That is why Paul says we should not “go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others.” Do not “boast about work already done in another man’s territory.”
This is a big lesson which we must carry as a baggage of life: “For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends”(II Cor. 10:12-18).
On the day we were decking the Nsimeyong church house in the late nineties, we paused at one moment to take some snapshots. One lady who was a distance away was hurrying to join us but was a little late. She made a profound statement that has remained indelible in my memory bank. She said she may not be part of the photograph, but God had already photographed her in heaven as testimony that she was part of the workforce!
Yes, all the mechanisms and channels we humanly put in place for boasting is not what commends us! We are approved only when the Lord is the one who commends us!
That is why it requires humility on our part, such that whoever must boast, let him boast in the Lord!
Prayer: Humble me Lord so that I should know that I am just a tool in your hand. Let my boast be only in you that without you I am nothing. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
