“Listen To Jesus Before Speaking For Him!”
Jesus “took Peter, James and John with him and went up onto a mountain to pray” because he needed them as his close prayer partners. Ironically while he was praying, these close aides “were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.”
As the two men were about leaving, pompous Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Just getting out of a heavy sleep, “he did not know what he was saying.” He couldn’t know because they had missed out on that important part when “Moses and Elijah appeared in glorious splendour talking with Jesus.” If Peter and his friends were not sleeping at that crucial moment they would have overheard their conversation which was about Jesus’ departure, which he was about to bring to fulfilment…”
The mission was spiritual, but Peter’s proposal was more of physical and material comfort. The king’s dog is the king of dogs. If that is so, Peter’s proposal of erecting three tents for Moses, Elijah and Jesus would give him and the two others opportunity to be servants to the three spiritual Lords.
He didn’t care whatever happened to the rest downhill!
My friend, when Jesus calls us to accompany him, he expects us to stay awake and share in his vigil. Do not fall asleep because when you awake you won’t know the full story and so you will think only of your physical and material comfort. You will say anything because you do not know what you are saying!
But then there is a voice from the cloud saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him”(Lk. 9:28-36).
Before his arrest he told his disciples, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation”(Lk.22:46). Yes, don’t just speak because you are close to Jesus; listen to him before speaking for him! Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to listen to Jesus before I speak and act for him. Amen!
Happy and blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
