“Water Is Life, Do Not Contaminate It With Sin!”(Jer.14:2-9).
During the time of prophet Jeremiah Jerusalem(Judah) was a place where natural streams and rivers were scarce. The city depended on adequate rain. They made cisterns to catch enough rain water. You can imagine the fate of animals, plants and humans when such a place experiences acute drought! Judah experienced such acute drought. Aa result of the drought the servants of nobles went to the cisterns but they found no water. The ground cracked because there was no rain in the land. Farmers were dismayed and even animals abandoned their new borns because there was no grass to eat.
The prophet saw this as punishment from God because of the unrepented sins of the people.
Within the African continent we are still blinded to the problem of water scarcity and its possible link with structural sins of “empire and domination systems” which are destroying the ozone layer, desertification through timber exploitation, pollutions and the contaminations of streams and rivers, coupled with improper management of waste plastic papers and bottles, and scrap metels that are all dumped in the streams and rivers.
The other day my entire household including myself had to get up in the deep of night to fetch tap water and fill all available containers. The taps do not flow constantly. In major cities there is no possibility of having clean water from any spring or fountain. Even in our villages portable drinking water is becoming a very scarce commodity. Streams and rivers whose waters were drinkable are all contaminated with unmanageable waste and sewage.
In the villages people go to portable and drinkable water spots as early as 1a.m to fetch water, and people leave such water points as late as 11p.m. Even so, no matter how early you go to the spring or fountain, one has to stand in the queue for hours before one is able to fetch maybe 20 litres of water. Yet we all agree that “water is life!”
The best thing elites can do for their communities now is to provide boreholes and good pumping wells in great numbers. In some African countries those of high society build cisterns within the foundation of buildings to be able to catch rain water that is used for washing, flushing and cleaning. As always, the scum of the earth are the ones who always suffer most.
Like in the days of old, Jeremiah is reminding us that we have to repent.
That notwithstanding Jeremiah’s prayer to God is for us too. Our sins may testify against us for our backsliding is great. But the Lord remains our hope, our Saviour in times of distress. The Lord is among us and will not forsake us. Let us trust in him and he will do for us what no man can do!
My friend, water scarcity may not be your main worry now, but there is something bothering you that you must take to the Lord in prayer. Do it now!
Prayer: Lord, you are my only hope, do not abandon me in my distress. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
