“Seek Eternal Life In Jesus Christ The Bread Of Life!”
Why do you follow Jesus Christ? This is a clumsy question. But come to think of it, when you reflect on it you may realise that it is not very clear in your mind why you follow Jesus.
Jesus told some people who followed him; and the message is for us too: “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill…”
Unless I’m proven otherwise, the three basic human needs of food, clothing and shelter rarely change. Of the three food remains the top priority. Maybe that is why we talk of “daily bread,” “put food on the table,” “making sure that the hand does not go to the mouth empty” etc!
Food may be this important, but God sometimes starve us to teach us that “man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”(Dt.8:3; Mt.4:4).
What this means is that as important as food can be to the body, spiritual nourishment is central. The physical body we feed with physical food soon become food for the soil to feed other food, but spiritual food leads to eternal life.
Jesus says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” As such, if we must do what God requires, then we have to “believe in the one he has sent”(Jn.6:22-29).
Jesus is the “Bread of Life; those who feed on him do not suffer spiritual lack or stagnation. John reminds us, “See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father…the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you…just as it has taught you, remain in him…continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him…”(I Jn.2:22-29).
Dear friend, fix your eyes on the food that leads to eternal life, not the food which gratifies the flesh!
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit feed me with the food divine which gives eternal life. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
