“Return To The Lord With All Your Heart…!”
“Shattered Dreams” by Mary McKee and the Genesis is the lyrics which come to my mind as we begin Lent season 2020. I am particularly caught up with the second stanza and the refrain: “But I hope now I need my father’s mercy, I have sinned and I know I’ve brought disgrace. I will ask him to forgive me though I’m wrong, I’ll be so glad just to look upon his face.”
Refrain: “Shattered dreams, shattered dreams, nothing I planned has turned out right. Shattered dreams…my life without Christ is shattered dreams.”
Like Mckee, just like the prodigal son we decided to leave home and family, leaving all the love our father had for us. Our interest was to fulfil a dream which lurks within us. But as it is we end up with shattered dreams because life without Christ is shattered dreams.
Little known prophet Joel reminds us that “even now” God says, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning” As a sign that we feel remorse we are asked to rend our hearts, not our garments. In other words, avoid an outward show of religion so that you truly become who you are as you alone and God know who you are! It is so serious that even “…the priests, who minister before the Lord” should “weep between the temple porch and the altar” telling the Lord, “spare your people, O Lord…”
Yes, “Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.”
When we use the season of Lent in deep contrition of our sins, then God himself pledges, “…never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations…”(Jl.2:12-19).
Prayer: Dear Lord, I return to you with all my heart. Do not make me an object of scorn and do not let my enemies gloat over me. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
