“Praise Be To The Lord…!”
“Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. He said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who treated Israel arrogantly.'” So saying, Jethro brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God…(Ex.18:1-12).
I was watching a Nigerian skit in which somebody went to a “babalawo” to look for charm. The “babalawo” started his incantation with a Nigerian gospel song, “Ekwueme, Ekwueme, Eze no-one like you…” The charm seeker was so surprised. On another occasion a “babalawo” started his invocation with, “In the mighty name of Jesus…!”
In our myopic worldview we often limit God to the narrow confines of our definitions of him. God is trully bigger than what people say. The name Moses, the liberator of Israel from Egyptian bondage is an Egyptian name. Moses was religiously and spiritually groomed by Jethro, a priest of Midianite religion.
This same priest of a foreign religion became the father-in-law of Moses.
This same Jethro is the one who in our text rejoices in what the Lord has done and offering sacrifices to the Lord. The Lord has decreed in his word, “By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every tongue will swear. They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone are righteousness and strength…'”(Is.45:23-24).
This is well expressed in regards to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father”(Phi.2:9-11).
Yes my friend; Jesus Christ is Lord and to him every knee must bow and every tongue confess! God has done so much for you in Jesus Christ. Let the testimony resound far and wide so that glory should be given to the Father in heaven.
