“Lord Keep Me Drinking The Spring Of Water Welling To Eternal Life!”
Jesus told the Samaritan woman, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become to him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Just like Nicodemus had misunderstood Jesus when Jesus told him of being born again, so too this woman misunderstood Jesus. She said to Jesus, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water”(Jn.4:13-15).
The woman’s mind, like that of Nicodemus was centred on the mundane, but Jesus was talking of the spiritual. When Nicodemus asked how possible it was for a grown up man to be born again, Jesus told him it means to be born of the Spirit”(Jn.3:21). Jesus gave the same explanation to the Samaritan woman: “…God is Spirit and his worshippers must worship him in Spirit and in truth”(Jn.4:24).
Even Jesus’ close aides had their minds set on the physical. When they urged him to eat something, he told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about”(4::31-32). When therefore he tells us, that he has come that we should have life and have it to the full (Jn.10:10), he is surely not implying that he is going to increase our material and physical bounties. Rather he has come so as to open our eyes to spiritual realities so that we become less materialistic and more spiritually inclined. A man who had no desire for material possessions would not be teaching or educating us on what to do so as to own the world!
When you encounter Jesus he enriches you with spiritual truths because his kingdom is not of this world.
It is not as if Jesus ignores material benefits, but such should not be the focus of life. Rather, “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and these things will be given to you as well” (Mt.6:33). Ask Jesus for the right things and he will make sure you have them.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ keep me drinking of that water which has become in me a spring of water welling to eternal life. Amen!
