“Jesus Christ, The One Sacrifice For All Time!”(Heb.10:11-18).
The story is told of a congregation that was rent apart because of the phrase in the Apostles’ Creed,“sitteth at the right hand of God the Father…” Some Christians argued that Christ could not be sitting for all this time without rising once in a while to take a walk, etc!
A sitting Pope, or a sitting Moderator or a sitting pastor etc, does not refer to the one as sitting permanently on a chair, it refers to the person occupying the seat of the said office at a particular time.
The other worry of the dissenting members of the said congregation was whether God who covers all space has a right hand where Christ is sitting? Again, the right hand of God should be understood in the same way that we talk of one’s right hand man, meaning the one on whom one can depend even at odd moments.
Hebrews states, “Day by day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,he sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his foitstool, because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
Christ is sitting because his assignment of sacrificing is completed; unlike the the other priests who day by day stand to perform their religious duties.
Jesus has completed his religious duties. By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” So to say, we have not yet been made holy. Being made is like growing to fullness; ut is a process. This process does not require any further sacrifice, because one is enough. The one sacrifice has made us perfect, even as we engage in the process of becoming holy.
While we are being made holy, we still stumble and fall short of God’s glory. When this happens, we should turn to Christ our Sitting Intercessor, Mediator, Advocate who sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, interceding, mediating and advocating on our behalf so that the Father will no longer remember our sins and lawless acts.“And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins.”
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for the grace and mecry we have received through your one for all time sacrifice for sin. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
