“Honour God With Your Body!” (I Cor. 6:12-20).
The Corinthian converts easily transposed what obtained in the temples of Corinthian gods/goddesses into the Church. For instance, the temple of the goddess Aphrodite on Acrocorinth at one time had in service 1,000 priestess prostitutes. (The world over, fertility rituals are often accompanied by sexual activity).
Temple prostitution was rampant thus leading to general sexual immorality. Paul suggested marriage as a remedy to “so much immorality”(I Cor. 7:2).
In one of her skits a lady comedian is weeping and lamenting that she was wrong to sing “…if I broke na my business…” She cries for help saying she is broke and it’s no longer her business alone. We are free to do what we want but some things that we want are not beneficial to us. It may be permissible to do whatever we want, but when we are mastered by that thing, we become its slave. This is especially true of promiscuity.
Paul reminds us that “the body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” And that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit that is in us. It is not possible to make the goat and the hyena to become bedfellows.
As believers we do not own ourselves. We have been bought with a price. It is common and easy to say, “I have given my life to Christ;” yet engaging parts of our bodies to unhallowed uses. However and in which ever way we have abused our bodies, this is a timely reminder for a turn-around: “Therefore honor God with your body.”
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit who dwells in me, help me to weed out anything that competes residence with you. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
