“Holy Spirit, Work Through Me!”
It is common among Christians to hear this: “When God calls, he anoints and equips.” Yet most of the time we count more on our abilities and capabilities. We forget too soon that we are but mere tools in the hands of the Master.
An axe cannot sharpen itself. The sharpness of the axe is determined by the woodcutter. God does not give you an assignment to execute if he won’t be there to do it with you.
There is no reason for excuses.
Excuses sometimes cause God’s anger to burn against us, as was the case with Moses. When God called Moses to go to Pharaoh, Moses was reluctant on several counts.
Moses’ first reluctance was that he did not see himself as worthy of standing before Pharaoh to ask to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. God assured him, “I will be with you…”(Ex.3:11-12).
His second reluctance was what if the people asked to know the name of God? God told Moses his name (Ex.3:13-14).
Moses argued further, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me…”(Ex.4:1). Moses still came up with another flimsy excuse how he was not an eloquent speaker. God reminded him that he is the One who gave man his mouth. God assured him, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Still Moses cooked up another excuse, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it”(Ex.4:10-18).
This is when “the Lord’s anger burned against Moses…”
Indeed, in all our abilities we are still inadequate to do it on our own. God has given us his Holy Spirit who does it through us.
We live in spiritual blindness when we think we can do it through our competencies. When the scales of spiritual blindness falls off we see things clearly to be able to understand that only God can make us see clearly (cf. Jn.9:1-7&13-17&32-39).
My friend, trust not in your own strength and abilities. Submit to the Lord and let the Holy Spirit work through you. Do not shy away from proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in word or deed. God can use a man born blind to testify to that gospel, just as he can use even those who preach Christ from selfish motives. We should rejoice that “In every way…Christ is preached”(Phi.1:12-18).
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit help me not to trust on my own competencies but to depend on the Lord. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
