“Freed Indeed By The Son Of God!”(Jn.8:31-36).
“…you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” has become one of those overused verses of scripture. And like it is with any text lifted out of context, it becomes a pretext. The question is what truth was Jesus talking about? What truth do we have in mind when we quote that verse? When we use that verse to talk of philosophical truth, it becomes an abuse of the verse.Philosophical truth is like beauty which lies in the eyes of the beholder alone. The world is topsy-turvy because of twisted philosophical truths. Everyone is right in her/his own eyes!
The truth which Jesus refers to is the truth that leads to salvation. There is a sense in which only those who believe in Jesus can know this truth. And knowledge of this truth dawns only when believers hold to his teaching. Holding on to Jesus’ teaching is what makes us really his disciples. “If you hold on to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Truth liberates us from the bondage of sin and leads to salvation. Salvation does not happen to us because we were born into christian families or because we have been christians since kindergarten. Salvation happens when we believe in Jesus, holding on to his teaching as true disciples. By this we come to the realisation that we are nothing without Christ who reveals to us the full knowledge of the things of the kingdom. And he has given us the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. This truth is that as long as we continue to sin, we remain slaves to sin. But when the son sets us free, we are free indeed. Hallelujah!
Bottomline: Believe in Jesus. Hold on to his teaching and the truth will dawn on you and set you free. And they that are saved by Jesus are free indeed! Jesus is the truth that liberates for he is the way, the truth and the life.
Weekend prayer: Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for being the truth that liberates. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
