“Feed Daily On The Word Of God!”
Back in the days after an impactful sermon you would hear from old mothers remarks like, “We were well fed today.” “The food today was very delicious.” Etc. Indeed; the word of God is food for the soul! It nourishes the spirit and enables us to have a closer walk with God.
We are reminded, “Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the Lord promised…”
Of course life is not smooth sailing even to the chosen. God is the one who leads us through miry pools and desert wanderings to let us know that there is no promised land without long years of desert wanderings.
Nevertheless, whatever he does is for our good. God uses our years of hardship to humble us, to test us to know what is in our hearts, whether or not we would keep his commands. Even in days when he starves us it is to teach us that “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord”(Dt.8:1-3). When the devil asked Jesus to transform stones into bread and eat Jesus reminded him of the above quote. “Man does not live on bread alone…”(see Lk.4:1-13).
Yes, “bread sustains but does not guarantee life, which is God’s gift to those who trust in and live by his word: his commands and promises.” God humbles us when he disciplines us through
hardships so that we turn to him in total dependence.
Jesus is himself that Bread of life(Jn.6:35), and he is the eternal word that existed from the beginning (Jn.1:1-4). He has become our great high priest. Therefore, “let us hold firmly to the faith we profess…” Jesus knows our weaknesses because “he was tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need”(Heb.4:14-16).
With God there is no “impossible future tense;” “For the Lord will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.” We are blessed when the Lord disciplines us and teach us from his law. He is an impartial judge who pay back to the proud what they deserve(Ps.94:1-4&11-12&14-16).
My friend, just make sure you do not forget the Lord. Feed on his word and be humbled by his chastisement!
Sunday prayer: Lord, I stand before your throne of grace with confidence. Grant me mercy and let me find grace in my time of need. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
