“Father, Let Your Will Be Done!”(Lk.22:35-53).
Today’s passion narrative is about prayer and the arrest of Jesus.
In most African cultures the last words of a dying father are like a will that must be executed accordingly. Reasoning from this background I see how important the last pieces of advise of Jesus is to us.
While on his last visit to the Mount of Olives, Jesus told his disciples,“Pray that you will not fall into temptation,” He later came back to them and found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow, he asked them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Prayer is the antidote to temptation. The moment our prayer lives weakens, the doors open wide for temptations to flood in.
While the disciples were sleeping, Jesus was praying and in anguish he prayed more earnestly until his sweat was like drops of blood.
We also learn a great lesson of faith from this last prayer of Jesus. “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
We easily fall into temptation when we allow our wills to override the will of God. When they came to arrest Jesus the disciples were ready to strike with their swords. One of them even cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. These disciples were doing their wills, not that of the Father.
Jesus told them, “No more of this!” So saying he touched the man’s ear and healed him. Peace and not violence is the will of the Father. Jesus whose life was at stake was nonplussed because he had submitted to the will of the Father.
When we let go, God takes over and do it his way. Whenever we act in the will of God, he keeps us out of temptation and harm’s way!
Let these last advice of Jesus remain with us and let us act on it: “Pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Pray and pray more earnestly and your guardian angel will appear from heaven to strengthen you in your hour of great need.
It is in solitary prayer and queit moments that we can easily hear the silent voice of the Lord who mostly whispers.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I go where you lead, let not my will, but yours be done. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
