“Be Spiritually Alert; Ready For Action!(I Pt.1:13-23).
Peter reminds us of the Levitical command,“…consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy…”(Lev.11:44). It may be argued that as imperfect beings, we cannot attain the level of perfection that belongs to divinity. However, the story of the Fall reminds us that through the Fall we have become like God, “knowing good and evil”(Gen.3:22).
God who knows good and evil decides on the good. To be holy is to be set apart – separated from sin and impurity. It is God’s perfect intention that we should strive for moral purity.
However, freewill is abused and the tendency is to use it against God.
Peter calls us to alertness:“…prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” When we are obedient to God we would no longer conform to our evil desires as when we were living in ignorance.
We are here on pilgrimage. We have no abiding home here, but there is a home for us where Jesus Christ has prepared a place for us. We should live as strangers here in reverent fear.
There is nothing in this world that has redeemed us. The realities of war and its concomitant destruction teaches us that there is no permanency or man-made omnipotence.
Jesus Christ alone is the one who has redeemed us; he is the imperishable seed.
Jesus Christ has revealed God to us fully. It is through him that we believe God. If we purify ourselves by obeying this truth, then let love lead.Let us have sincere love for our brothers, let us “love one another deeply, from the heart.”
God loved us deeply from the heart to be able to sacrifice his Son for us. Jesus Christ loved us deeply from the heart to shed his blood for us. We too must love one another deeply from the heart to be able to be one another’s keeper.
Yes, prepare your mind for action to be holy and to love deeply from the heart through actions of love.
Sunday prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for your redeeming grace. Holy Spirit help me to strive to be holy and to love others deeply from the heart.Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
