“Abundant Life From The Good Shepherd!”(Jn.10:1-10).
The lesson of life is quite simple. As it is, rivers do not drink themselves. A tree does not benefit its fruits. A candle burns itself to extinction but it does not benefit from its own light.
On the day of birth you are helpless. Until you grow up, you depend entirely on others for your welfare. On the day you die, oher people – including those you ignored or tormented – are the ones to ensure that you return to the dust from which you were made.
You came into the world with nothing and you are going to leave with nothing. This is how life humbles us. Inbetween life and death we behave as if we own the world. It is expedient that we make the world a better place than we met it. But whatever we do should be service to humanity – even though we may have some benefits out of our endeavours.
The motive for the choices we make and the decisions we take makes all the difference!
I have had occasions to chat with people who once served like shepherds to cattle that were not theirs. One told me how they sometimes deliberately cause a cow to sustain an injury which causes it not to be able to walk. They will then alert the owner and cause it to be sold at a cheap price to a prearranged customer. Some of them do not care to lead the flock to green pasture; reason why the flock often wander and eat the crops of farmers. And this is a common reason for the perennial farmer/grazier tensions in some regions.
Indeed, it is rare to have a committed hired shepherd. Some just wants to earn a salary and do not care about the cattle.
It is not different with leaders in both the secular and ecclesiastical domains.
When a clergyman is interested only in his own gains, he won’t care about the concerns and worries of the flock. In the same way there are secular leaders who consider it law because they so desire it to be so. The Lord Jesus Christ says such are thieves and robbers who climbs the sheep pen by other means.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Chief Shepherd. We recall that it was the influence of neighbouring countries that enticed Israel to ask Samuel to give them a king. Israel was a theocracy where God was king and ruled through the prophets.
Unfortunately even the prophets and priests who were mostly Pharisees and Sadduccees turned out to be a burden on the people instead of being burden carriers.
Jesus the Son of God, being the true shepherd is the restoration of a theocratic leadership. He says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
We are tempted to ask where this fullness of life is found in a constantly chaotic world like ours? My friend, the answer is not blowing in the wind; the answer is in the spiritual realm. Seek the things of the Spirit and there you will meet the Good Shepherd and enjoy his shepherding.
A sheep that does not know the master’s voice will starve in the pen while the ones who know the master’s voice follow him to green pastures. Therefore, know your master’s voice, be attentive to his call. Then follow him and you will fine green pastures – life to the full!
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to master the master’s voice to be able to follow him to green pastures.Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
