“When Mercy And Grace Overlap!”(Ez.36:22-28).
Today, I walked down memory lane to the East African Revival ignited in the early 1930s, spreading across Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. What sparked the Revival is quite noticeable in our homeland for some decades now: widespread dissatisfaction with nominal Christianity leading to moral complacency and corruption in the church.
Such a revival is possible only when there is an overlap between mercy and grace – with human agency combining prayer, radical confession, and grassroots fellowship.
True Revival happens when God does what he does, not because of what we have become as he wants, but for the sake of his name.
God says, “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean, I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then… you will be my people, and I will be your God.”
Putting a new heart and a new spirit in us and putting his Spirit in us is the apex of the overlap between mercy and grace.
The overlap between mercy and grace is a representation of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. The overlap or intersection is where God chooses not to punish us for our mistakes – showing mercy – and at the same time he is actively pouring on us blessings and favor that we have not earned – his grace.
Mercy witholds the punishment we deserve and grace bestows blessings and love we do not deserve.
In this overlap, God overlooked our sins and gave us his Son as a ransom to show his love, and together with the Son, they have given us the Holy Spirit.
May this Spirit lead us to abhor the nominal and comfortable Christianity that we have become used to, and which has led to moral complacency and corruption. May the Spirit ignite in us the fire of Revival!
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit, ignite in us the fire of Revival that denounces nominal Christianity that has led to moral complacency and corruption. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
