“The Side Effects Of Plenty!”(Gen.13:1-7).
Some times quarreling and hatred among family members/relatives/neighbours is generated by disparity in wealth distribution. The poor often accuse the wealthy for being responsible for their poverty through occultism.
But our story is about two wealthy relatives. Although it was Abram whom God called, he left together with his nephew Lot. Years went by and both men became wealthy. Unfortunately this increase in wealth became the cause of disintegration.
“Their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. And quarreling arose between” their herdsmen.
A dance group in my village has this song:“When they fill a house with money, I will choose a humanbeing. A human being is more than money.
We brought nothing into the world and we are going to take nothing out of it. We should not allow ourselvees to be blinded by materialism.
My late brother Dr Moses Fokong of the defunct West Cameroon Modern Jazz Orchestra sang, “Nyikob ni fa yum mbo mun yi i to fa mbun dzù a.” – God gives to the person who will share with others. God does not bless us to amass and hoard! The more we amass and hoard, so too we begin to disintegrate with our families, relatives and friends.
Do not let your possessions to be so great that you are not able to stay together as family/relative/neighbour! Do not let your possessions be the reason for quarreling between you and others or between your staff and the staff of others. Isn’t it scadalous that even though the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in that land, the land could not contain Abram and his nephew? It is shameful and disgraceful that the workers of Abram and his nephew Lot will be quarreling to the amusement of the Canaanites and the Perizzites!
May the Lord bless you with abundance and also bless you with the spirit of sharing so that others can be blessed through your blessings!
And like Abram of old, do not forget to call on the name of the LORD when you get to the place where you had first built an alter.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to manage my blessings so that it does not become the cause of quarreling. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
